Childhood Memories

A Memory of Hastings.

In the 1940s and 1950s as a young lad and then teenager, I used to spend my summer holidays with my grand parents who lived at 171 St. Helens Road Hastings.
I have very fond memories of Hastings in general and in particular of Alexander Park. I used to love the firework display staged around the boating lake and walking the whole length of the park from my grand parents' home to the Queens Road end.
I also liked to travel the trolley bus from the park terminus to town and sometimes to the Cooden Bay terminus.
One historical note that I can share is that in the 1920s my grand father used to run a coach and taxi company known as Premier Transport. He had two coaches, both open charabancs and used to run local sight seeing tours from Hastings promenade. In the winter one of the charabancs was converted into a removal lorry. They also owned a guest house in Devonshire Place and ran a sweet/paper shop in or near the White Rock Pavilion.
