More about this scene
The remains of Hastings Castle, the first built by William the Conqueror, crown Hastings' West Hill, with superb views over the town and out to sea. Coastal erosion, culminating in a great storm in 1287, destroyed much of the castle fabric, seen in this picture as an ivy-covered ruin.
