Hastings, From The Pier 1890

More about this scene
Hastings emerged as a seaside resort in the early 19th century, and expanded rapidly from its kernel of a fishing port and town. In this view from the pier virtually all the houses still survive, many now in a state of serious decay and others drastically altered. In the early morning the jaunty striped bathing machines await business.
