Hastings, The Castle 1890

More about this scene
A Norman castle was built on West Cliff by William the Conqueror, which was replaced by a stone one. All is romantic ruin, and it is a much-favoured spot with visitors. Here the photographer looks past the ruins of the church (the arch is that from the nave into the central tower) towards the stumpy fragment of Henry II's keep. Much of the original castle site has disappeared through erosion of the cliffs. Seaside and Coastal Sussex: From Bosham to Rye
