It's Milne Feild Isn't It, 'e' Before 'i'?

A Memory of Hatch End.

Most people though it was just a spelling mistake that then stuck as an oddity, unless anyone knows better. Great set of pictures.

Why was it spelled in that way? As a boy in the 1950's I asked the question and no one knew. I am still in the dark and curious.
I want to know too. Perhaps the Hatch End Association could tell us?
We moved to Milne Feild in 1961 and my parents lived there for the rest of their lives. I was told (or read somewhere) soon after we moved that the original signs had been painted by someone whose first language was German and they made the error. I believe the German word for `field' is `feld' so that makes sense. THere is also a nearby road called Furham Feild (same spelling of `Feild').
