Memories Of Hatch End

A Memory of Hatch End.

Came across this site whilst looking up about Soman Sports. I was doing some sorting out and came across an old paper bag with their name on it. I was a paper boy for Smiths for many years as were my siblings and delivered papers to most of the roads in Hatch End during my 5-6 years there.
I attended Grimsdyke school before going to what was then Blackwell Secondary School. I remember many of the shops mentioned in an earlier post especially the post office and remember postman bikes leaning up against the wall outside the entrance. My brothers and l used to buy £5 of coins from Nat West Bank (National Westminster as it was) take them home to Cedar Drive to see if we needed any for our collection then return them to one of the other banks before going back to Nat West for some more. I think we ran them out of the coins on one occasion.

I also remember the old building before the flats at Dove Park were built but think you could only just see it from the bridge but not sure as time have faded the memories

Soman Sports ......aah yes, went in there for bits for my electric train set and as I got older went next door to Giles Record Shop for the latest 45's !
I was holding Barry Jolly's dog on a lead outside while he shopped and the dog dragged me in to their window display!
I remember Sowman sports, there was a slot in the door frame just to the right side of the door which encouraged you to roll a penny down, then the train set in the window would start up. That's where a lot of my pocket money went.
