More about this scene

Built in the late 18th century, this was home to the Pattison family in the years 1825 to 1865. Dorothy Wyndlow Pattison was born on 16 January 1832, the eleventh child and tenth daughter of the rector of Hauxwell. After her schooling she wanted to join Florence Nightingale in the Crimea, but her father forbade this. Instead she became a pioneer of civil nursing, spending much of her life in Walsall, where she ran the Cottage Hospital. Her skills were such that she carried out much work normally done by surgeons. She died on Christmas Eve 1878 in Walsall, where a statue commemorates her life. The Rectory, her birthplace, was demolished in 1958.
