Beyond the village rises Wetherlam, the most northerly of the Coniston Fells, and over to the left, hidden by cloud, Lancashire's highest peak, the Old Man. Prominent above Hawkshead is St Michael and All Angels' Church, of which William Wordsworth wrote '..I saw a snow white church upon her hill, sit like a throned lady…'
