More about this scene
Built in the 15th century as a gatehouse to Hawkshead Hall, which was then a grange belonging to Furness Abbey, the Old Courthouse has served many other purposes including stabling and a church. A niche above the gateway once held a figure of the Virgin Mary and below, much worn by the passage of time, is carved a lion's head.
