Haywards Heath, The Broadway 1961

More about this scene
In 1830 Haywards Heath was described as 'a byword for the wilderness of its aspect, the rusticity of its few and scattered cottages, and the miryness of its roads'. Once the railway arrived this all changed, and Haywards Heath developed rapidly on an enclosed common. Little of the original common survives, and the Broadway is typical of the unstructured development during the Victorian and Edwardian era.
