Visiting Fona
A Memory of Headley Down.
Most Saturdays my sister Anita and I used to travel on the bus from Bordon to the bus stop in this picture, (at 8 years old I thought I was very grown up) where we would get off the bus to visit our Godmother, Fona, in a little black house just around the corner from the one in the picture. I remember the houses being a bit higgeldy piggeldy with footpaths meandering between and around them. There was grass and fir trees everywhere you looked. Fona was a really lovely lady who was married to (Uncle Dennis) who used to love watching the sport on the TV. Their daughter, Joy, is my other Godmother and I remember thinking she was a princess she was so pretty, she used to let me play with all her many bottles of nail varnish. All my memories from there were good ones. Fona would take us walking and blackberry picking with her dog Whiskey and when we got home we'd always have peanut butter on toast and a cup of hot chocolate. She also used to take us a bit further up the road where we would collect chestnuts. I was really sad when they pulled the houses down and replaced them with the cold bland council houses. When they took the little black houses down they took away a lot more than buildings.
