More about this scene
Hendon was first recorded in the 10th century, but the Hendon we see in this photograph has very little in common with the original mediaeval centre about half a mile (as the crow flies) to the north. The expansion we see here was directly associated with a major road link into London and the arrival of the Northern Line in 1923. The neo-Georgian buildings around Central Circus clearly reflect that date, with the somewhat faceless super-cinema following a decade or so later. Enjoy the street furniture in this photograph, which includes a now almost-forgotten item - a police-box.
