School Days

A Memory of Herne Bay.

I started school at 5yrs old ii then lived in Fernlea Avenue the house was called Anglo West and was number 44 (how i remember this so well i do not know) my mum took me to school through the park the school was not far from the end of the park cant remember the road was it Kings Road? I remember a street party must have been after the war (i was born in 1941) We thats my Mum Dad two brothers and myself lived with my dads parents our grandparents then my dad died in 1943 and my mum and myself and brothers moved to victoria park number 16 and called The Chestnuts. We played outside all the time and seemed to only come home to eat, My brothers made go karts out of odd bits of wood and went up the downs to race them. Stan once going so fast he went over the wall by the Kings Hall and landed on the prom. He was ok! I never learnt to swim but enjoyed time on the beach. We had I spy books and had to find various items on the beach and tick them off in the book. I remember the sea freezing over and the floods. My friend Brenda (sadly no longer with us) went to the park to have a swing and the flood waters were underneath us. We were the first children to go to the newly built Secondary School at Greenhill such a large school. we managed to get lost on our way to classes we didnt like so we could miss some of the lessons but this didn't last long! Another lady wrote a memory of the teachers at this school i remember them all. After leaving school i went to work at what was then called Cripplecraft (now Strode Park) as a junior shorthand typist i loved it there. My mum came home one day and said we were moving to canterbury. So it was goodbye to Herne Bay. My husband and i still visit Herne Bay as may parents and brother are buried in Herne Cemetery and we have a plot there so will return !! We now live in suffolk.
