More about this scene
A view from the Shire Hall along what was to become a heavily congested street, until the building of the new relief road, with a string of Georgian and early Victorian shopfronts overshadowed by the 1857 Corn Exchange, likened by Nicolas Pevsner to an 'ambitious Methodist chapel'. An early omnibus collects passengers bound for Ware, Cheshunt, Broxbourne and Waltham Cross from outside Barclays Bank.
