More about this scene
It is said that Jane Austen based Meryton, in 'Pride and Prejudice', on Hertford, and that Elizabeth Bennet met Mr Darcy at Shire Hall. If this were true, she would have been driven past Parliament Square. However, it would not have been the pleasant, open area photographed by Frith. In 1920 a number of squalid and tightly packed buildings had to be demolished during the construction of the war memorial, which was designed by Sir Aston Webb and sculpted by Alfred Drury. It was unveiled in November 1921.
