More about this scene
During the mid 19th century, new suburban houses were built along the road leading to Ware. As well as dwellings, one or two factories provided work for local people. The main employer was Addis, the brush manufacturers, who came to Hertford in the 1920s when they took over the premises of the Hertford Steam Laundry Company. In 1935 they built a new state-of-the-art factory to a design by David Hamilton. Although production has now moved to Wales, the Grade II listed building still survives in Ware Road.
