More about this scene

These two photographs, taken in Village Road, depict the old village centre. The scene has changed remarkably little over the years, apart from what is sold in the shops. The small, ornate castellated building in the centre of the row of shops used to be Heswall Village Post Office, but that later moved to its present position in the building to its immediate right. In the photograph it is occupied by Keegan's shoe shop, but it now houses an art and craft shop.

Memories Of The 60s

I think it was about 1963, I was sent to Heswall, to a Home for children. I was about 4 years old. My Mum said our Doctor advised for me to go there, because I wasn’t eating. I don’t know what the place was called, & I can't remember much about it. My late wife Sandra stayed at the home, with her sister Carol, for 6 weeks in the summer of 1957. Sandra was just turned 11 and Carol 9 and a half. About 20 years ago Sandra and I went back to Heswall and, as others have commented, the house is now private and the beach is overgrown. The railway line has long since been built over. My Life At Heswall Children's Hospital

I worked at Heswall childrens hospital from 1966 untill it sadly closed in 1984.My maiden name was Hession.I wander if anyone remembers it.

Heswall Children's Hospital 1933 1934
I was 4 years old when I was taken from Liverpool to this Hospital. It was a very frightening experience because I was the first child in the family and they say I was there for 6 weeks. I have never found out why I was sent there. There was always secrecy about this and some in the family said I should never have been sent there. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
