Thomas Hardy, poet and novelist, was born in this cottage in 1840, writing his first few novels sitting on the window ledge of the upstairs right-hand room. Hardy took a keen interest in the fortunes of the property until his death in 1928. The cottage is now in the possession of the National Trust.
