i started work on September 15th 1965 as an oiler and greaser in Hirwaun / Hirwaun Pond, although the station was closed i knew the stationmaster Jack Boulton, he was a great character, happy days! i went on to work in Cardiff and Swansea areas as bases, but later covered the whole country in a different role but still railway based.
The very first name belongs to my great grandfather, John Ashley. Died 27/02/1917 serving his country and is buried Salonika Memorial Cemetry. Formerly married to Edith Ashley, 3 Cottage Lodge, Penderyn Road, Hirwaun.
I worked at the railway station at Hiwaun, for a few years before moving to work at Shrub Hill Station, Worcester. I think that the Station Master was a Mr.Boult/Boulton. It is a pity that the trains do not run any more on that line. I was born in number 10 Trenant,my dearest best friend was Nancy Evans(Powell) other friends were Maisie Richards, Marjorie Rowe, Diane Williams, Christine(had a sister Enid) Brynmore Hill, Dai Davies and all the other scallywags in Trenant. My granddad Harry Sedgemore was manager of the Billiard Hall in Hirwaun. My Ganny moved to Trewaun when Dad died. I loved the old cinema in Hirwaun the spiral staircase ...see more
