Netherne

A Memory of Hooley.

Hooley Hospital, although near Hooley, was in fact Netherne Hospital for the mentally ill. Those patients allowed out frequented the Hooley shops, The Star public house (long gone due to road widening) and village jumble sales. The hospital site is now an up market housing estate and renamed Netherne -on the- Hill.

My Mum, Sylvia Licence worked there and i remember my sisters and I (Dawn, Carol & Beverley) went to the pantomines every Christmas. I also worked in the VG stores with Kim from the Post Office. I was there from about 1965 - 1979. I am Dawn Tongue nee Licence
I remember your family, but you would have known my younger sisters more - Cheryl & Amanda.
you're name, Roger rings a bell but not so sure about your sisters. Sorry ladies....
have some wonderful memories from when i was a kid in Hooley and now with Dad poorly i seem to think more about them days when life was free and easy!!! My sister Carol still lives in the area (Merstham) but Bev and i have moved away, Bev in Gloucester and myself in Stoke. xx
Hi Dawn, as you don't remember my sisters you may recall my brother Alan, he lives in Merstham. I'm still in Hooley, retired and looking after mum (88) who remembers your family well. I was Cub Scout leader at Chipstead, until retiring, if you were ever in the Guides that could also be where our paths crossed. Best wishes and regards to your sisters Roger W.
Hi Roger, so sorry for the lateness of this reply. If i remember rightly, i was asked to leave the guides, not sure as to why. Probably a bad influence, lol. I have had a look on google and have seen that all in all the area hasn't changed a great deal. our primary school is now a private residence and of course the hospital has gone but all in all very much the same. good to hear from you. take care and regards to the family. Dawn. x
