More about this scene

Hopton is a diminutive village resort on the A12 just south of Great Yarmouth. Here holiday makers could enjoy the quiet attractions of the 'Constitutional Holiday Camp' well away from the bustle and bright lights of its noisier and bigger neighbour. Every effort has been made to intensify the holiday atmosphere: there are 'cabin' style chalets daubed with bright colours, rustic seats, flower-bedded lawns and plenty of beach space.

Memories of Hopton, the Holiday Camp c1955

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Hopton, The Holiday Camp c.1955

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I worked at the Golden Sands Holiday Camp, 1961. Had the most fun. One evening, one of the workers had an invite to join a party at the Constitutional Holiday Camp. We ran across the cornfield behind our girls chalets -and back later that evening. The following day, we all were called in front of Manager, Mr. Petty, and an irate farmer. We could not deny going through the waist high corn - there was the pathway, to and from our chalet block. Ah but we had fun. Bonny Cother
While I was at university I spent the summer holiday vacations waitressing at Hopton's holiday camp,1952, 1953 and 1954. I am now living in Devon and am in the same drama as a male friend who had holidayed there in his late teens, almost certainly when I was there. No two waitresses could have the same name so I was called 'Sally'. I had a wonderful time there, worked very hard, played hard ...see more
As a young lad we visited the Constitutional Holiday Camp for a number of years, as far as I can remember I went with my parents from about 1949 to 1955. At that time my parents were living in East London which even by then was still suffering from the results of the wartime bombing, and to visit Hopton was of course a breath of fresh air (in more ways than one). I can always remember the chalets ...see more
Was this camp called the 'Constitutional Holiday Camp'? If so I remember being sent there for a week's holiday by the British Legion Orphans Committee - it felt like I was going to the other end of the world from Cambridge. I had a great time even though I was very homesick for a few days. I remember having to queue up in the mornings with a very large enamelled jug to get hot water from a stand pipe tap! and the food ...  well, the less said about that the better eh!
