Life Without Love
A Memory of Horncastle.
I’m Don Spencer.
I entered homeleigh orphanage in 1954 at the age of 7.
After a period in reception, I was transferred to home 10, a house for boys, run by miss Shaw as our mother.
A ginger haired bad tempered woman, who took delight in punishing us at every opportunity.
Outside activities kept me sane, school and football mainly.
I did run away a couple of times and the feeling of relief was tremendous.
Whilst I was in home 10 there were also another 6 or 7 other boys.
I remember Harry Blades, Hsrry was much older than most of us.
There was Patrick Fothergill and two boys who were twins and quite nasty to Harry.
I’m sorry, but I go not hzve any nice memories of homeleigh, apart from having quite a nice Aunty a couple of evenings a week and my visits to Norman Vardys house.
I was 12 years old when I eventually found a foster home in a Lincolnshire village called Bassingham and my life life changed in a positive and happy way.
Chat again later, in the meantime welcome any emails re: homeleigh
