My Childhood In Hornchurch

A Memory of Hornchurch.

My parents bought our house in Mansfield Gardens in 1934 for £500. It had no garage but nobody in the road had a car anyway. My name was Jenifer Shearring. I went to North Street Primary School, infants and juniors from1950 to 1957 and then I went to Hornchurch Grammar School from 1957 to 1963. I remember a lot of the shops that others have mentioned, like Alings the bakers and Fentimans - in fact I was at school with Gordon Fentiman. Like others my brothers and I played over at Harrow Lodge park where we played jumping streams and were out all day with my mother not knowing where I was until we went home for food cos we were hungry. It was so safe then. I used the library over there and the swimming pool when it was built.

What did the Fentiman's shop sell? I remember Fentiman having a market garden to the north of the shops in the High Street but that was derelict by the mid 1950s.
