The Edney's Of Horndean

A Memory of Horndean.

The Red Lion in Horndean was run by the Edney family for over 110 years. In the 1841 Census Daniel Edney (previously of The Leopard, Purbrook) and his wife Charlotte are running the pub. When Daniel died in 1850 his wife Charlotte took over. She remained as Landlady until in her seventies her son Henry Tupper Edney and his wife Mary took over. Henry sadly became ill (ending up in Knowle mental hospital) and Mary carried on running the pub. The family scandalously ended up in the national press when her daughter, Emma, married a gentleman from London and ended up in the divorce courts when Emma refused to consumate the marriage and it had to be annulled. Following Mary Edney's death in 1893 at the age of 58, her two daughters Emma and Elizabeth take over the License of the pub. In 1904 Elizabeth Edney marries a chap called Albert Biden from Portsmouth and on the 1911 Census they are the Licensees. They remain at the Red Lion until 1937 when Elizabeth dies. The last record I can find is Ella Biden, their daughter, applying to take over the Licence. I would love to know if she did -or who else followed after this very long reign.

I live in one of the brewery cottages in Horndean where the three Edney daughters lived. I would like some more info about the girls. They are not mentioned here. Percy Powell built my cottage in 1870. The conveyance states the Edneys as the former owners
