Hornsey Convalesent

A Memory of Hornsea.

I still have nighmares from being in this hospital. I was there in 1967 for around a year. I have read other people's accounts of being there which brought back many more horrors. The staff were horrible and we were all terrified. Forcing us to eat scrambled eggs .make our own beds. All money sent from home was never seen by us. Some naughty children were put in straight jackets and tied to table legs. I had a boil lanced on my knee without aesthetic. I was 7. I know the ward was investigated and closed as I was there at the time but all records have been closed for 100 years. That is so wrong. We as victims should be able to see out medical records as we don't know why we were there .

I was there for about a couple of months and it wasthe worse place i have ever been, i was sent from Driffield Hospital after i had been on the childrens ward for a long time it was supposed to ge me ready to go home but all it did was make me so scared by the way i was treated, i also saw so many orrible things happen to the othe children there. I was made to go and sit in the cloak room because i wouldnt stop crying and i had to clean the shoes, there was a girl who i knew also from Driffield hospital who had arrrived a week or so before me she was called Lynda and she was a little older than me. she waslovely and tried to look afterr me she kept me going as i was crying all the time andrefused to clean the shoes i just threw them about in the cloakroom, she picked them all up and her and a boy then cleaned them for me.
She left a week or so bfore me and shy gave me a dolll of hers to comfort me, i would reallly liketo find her and get in touch as i would like to thank her so much for looking our for me.
I do remember that the consultant who sent me there was a Dr Bogdon, i dont know if he realised what a hell hole he was sending us to. these are just a few of my memories lots of other things happend to me which have stayed with me all my life, i have never been able to this day and im now 63 to go to bed with out a light on or the tv i am still tooscared. I do wonder if anyone was reprted or charged with crimes against us because of the abuse by the staff? Has anyone tried to get all the children together t put in a complaint, or been to a solicitor to get advice i would be interested to know how this turned out. I do know that questions were asked in parliament by MPs about the way we were treated, but dont know if it was taken any further. i would be interested to find out
