More about this scene
The Carfax 1907 The Carfax and market place is at the heart of the old town. The reign of Queen Victoria saw many additions and rebuildings, including the fountain on the right erected in 1897 to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee, now relocated to the north end of North Street, and the Italianate stucco building on the far right built in 1893. The tall and elegant spire beyond is that of St Mark's Church, built in 1870. The tower and spire survive today, but are dwarfed by 1980s and 1990s office blocks. Francis Frith's Sussex A Century Ago
