Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

A mile or so north of Ampthill, we divert right to visit the ruins of Houghton House. It looks out from the escarpment of the Greensand Ridge across the plain of central Bedfordshire through which the Great Ouse meanders. It was built from about 1615 in brick with stone dressings for the Countess of Pembroke, the sister of the Elizabethan poet and soldier Sir Philip Sidney. It was occupied from 1767 by the Earl of Upper Ossory, who had provided Ampthill with the obelisk water pump. Sad to say, the house was largely dismantled by the Duke of Bedford in 1794.
