Hounslow 1957 +

A Memory of Hounslow.

We lived in Lower Feltham and the bus took us to Hounslow which was a great place for shopping for the latest clothes...not that I had a lot of money to spend. In 1957 I started a Parke Davis in the Home Sales Dept. as a very junior junior! Their offices were the latest design and the pay was good. £3.76 my first pay packet. They made the toothpaste called Euthymol and I have used it ever since. I am now 78 yrs old and have all my teeth !!!
On a Friday night or it may have been a Saturday night there was dancing above Burtons the Tailors...to a record player..it was great. We had to leave early to catch the bus home and one evening a chap said he also lived in Feltham and would see us home..he was about 18 yrs old...so myself and sister said we would stay to the end. When we got outside he had a 'push bike' and we had to walk all the way home...and got in trouble with Dad!
It started to change in the late 50's/60's when the houses were being bought up by outsiders and all the old folks moved out and it became a different place. The cinema was good but quite pricey...we lined up behind the price stands outside...all in proper order.

I remember the old station entrance. I used to go to Feltham by train from Brentford. As you say Feltham has changed. I remember the pond and a railway siding that crossed the street to the compass laboratory.
My Dad would go to watch Brentford play and always supported them. Yes, I remember the station well - I would get the Bus to Feltham Station, catch the train to Waterloo, walk over the bridge and along the Aldwych to work in a Bank...leaving the house at 6.30 am and not getting home much before 7.30pm and I was only 17 yrs old...and Saturday was a half day finishing at 1.00pm.
How did we do it then? To-day, the youngsters wouldn't even consider a job with hours like that but we were a different beed and had to follow what our Parents did.
The Pond - one day we were paddling and I cut my foot on glass! There was a paddling pool behind the shops opposite the Pond. Nice to hear your message.
