A safely loaded rowing boat is pushed away from the stone quay of the commercial harbour leading out into Belfast Lough. It is interesting that the boatman is using an oar on the starboard side, and is watching the effect on the craft as the boy standing with both hands on the port oar takes the strain on the rowlock. Clearly, he does not want the boy to exert too much pressure and so counteract his own actions, which would turn the boat too quickly and make it collide with the moored craft ahead. Together, they can control the boat until it is in open water, where it will be safer and easier to turn.
