Duke Street School/Gaythorn

A Memory of Hulme.

I too remember going to Duke Street School which later became Gaythorn (named after the gasworks I think). My name then was Mulvanny. Mr Beasley used to make us stand on our seats until we got the answers right. Mr Davies was a dab hand at throwing the board rubber! Always on target. Mrs Holmes was formidable and took no nonsense. Mr Jacks often had a boy or two awaiting their fate (the strap) outside his office. We lived on Duke Street which later became Downside Street. I remember the Birchall's, the Carey's, the Docherty's (Pat & Joyce?) and the O'Brien's. We lived opposite the Albion Pub (I think). I too remember when we played on the 'crofts' or bombed area. I thought that was it's name! Never realised until much later it was because it had been bombed. About 1958 I went on to Jackson Street School (South Hulme Secondary) near the Junction. Also used to go the Pop cinema occasionally on a Saturday. We used to go to St Phillip's Church and I remember the Whit Walks, all in our finery. Mrs Pargeter was one of the Sunday School teachers. Lovely lady. Those were the days. Anyone remember me or my sisters, Pauline & Valerie?

I remember David Hayes - in fact accidentally he set me on fire. His brother and he were absolutely shocked and pulled my burning coat off! Then David ran for his Mum. What a woman she poured acriflavine on my left arm - David had tried to help by scratching the embers off my arm. Can't remember much more but I was taken to the MRI. I did make a full recovery eventually the arm wasn't even scarred.
So I do remember David and his brother Billy. Won't go into more details but ask him does he remember me. At the time I would be about seven and my name is Anne.
