Memories Of Hulme
A Memory of Hulme.
My name is Lynda (Howarth) and I lived in Hulme from 1943 until 1953. My Mum was Edith Woods, and she married Stanley Howarth. My mum used to live in Mary Street and then we moved to Junction Street, after the war. I went to Mulberry Street School and my best friends were Anne (from a big family) and Pat Fletcher, who lived next door. I also remember the family called Sparrows. Another friend was Denis Dinsdale, I think we went on a day trip to Blackpool. I have a photo of this day which brings back lots of memories. I remember the Whit Walks and have photos of me walking holding the ribbon in my frock that my mum proudly made. There was a shop in our street which sold everything. We used to sit on the cut firewood whilst we waited to be served, and got told off when it all fell down! We used to play 'ropes' on the lamp posts and banged our heads quite a lot. We all went to the Sat morning pictures, first one house then across the road to the next showing. We were all great pals and played in the street for hours, playing chasy, hide and seek, and hop scotch, and the girls would tuck up their frocks into their knickers when we would stand on our hands against the wall. I could go on and on, I have great memories of these years, and my lovely friends. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or these times.
I married Peter Worthington from Moss Side and emigrated to Australia in 1962. I divorced and then remarried - my name is now Lynda Drew. Would be great to hear from any of my childhood friends.
