More about this scene
Around 1855, Charles Veasey built a steam-powered mill manufacturing linseed oil and cattle cake. The mill, on the south bank of the Great Ouse, later became a hosiery factory, and has now been converted into a prestige housing complex. In the background stands the flour mill of Brown & Goodman. This was built in 1861 and contained sixteen pairs of grinding stones; it was demolished in 1969. The photograph was taken from Castle Hill, the site of the castle, which was built in 1068 and destroyed by Henry II in 1173. Nothing survives other than a grassy mound.
