Remembering The Good Days

A Memory of Hyde.

I was born in milk street Hyde in the 40's went to Greenfield Street Juniors then onto Leigh street Secondary, I so remember Hetts sweet shop the ABC minors at the Stannies, the market, woolworths, the house that jack built, the May queen and whit walks when we all got dressed up, even with little money, we looked our best, I remember tide marks, round the neck and down the arms due to smogs etc, we didn't get baths very often, I remember our green tin bath hanging up in the kitchen, I remember how people were so house proud in those days, dolly blue, washing boards. Savoury ducks from the tripe stall on the market and especially meschias and the godley rock and aniseed from the market hall, yes they were very special to me and I still look at the house where I was born opposite the carpark that was once port street, and wish times were as good. Hi Margaret, I clearly remember you, we went through school together alway in the same class. I remember going with you after school to your grandmother's on Milk Street. I remember you lived Harbour Far Road and had two sisters, one was Jean but can't remember the other. The last time I saw you you were in Maggies Fish and Chip shop on Bennett Street. I wanted to say hello Margaret, but I didn't think you would remember me. Much water has gone under the bridge since we were at school together. Remember Miss Marlor, Mr Birch, and Miss Bennett in the infants.

I wish you had have spoken, those days were the best ever, everyone was polite no angry people, little crime and just an orange and 1 toy at Christmas but they were really appreciated. My sister Hilda died 3 years ago she had breast cancer and my younger sisters Jean had breast cancer but doing well now and just moved to Scotland to be near her family, I have a daughter and a son, my daughter lives in Astley with her youngest Kara who is 16 going on 21, her sister is doing a masters degree in Liverpool, my son lives in Bristol with his partner and 2 children. I called into the office next to Grans house in milk street a couple of years ago and they asked if I wanted to look round no 2 it was so overpowering and brought so many memories flooding back, in those days everyone in the street was an Aunty, I should love to buy that house, hope it never gets demolished it’s my link with the past. Love to hear from you again x
I think I remember you Jeffrey, don’t remember many teachers apart from some where very strict, and didn’t think twice about throwing the board cleaner at you or slapping you with a ruler, or a pump in front of the class.
