Growing Up

A Memory of Icklesham.

I was born into a family called Burns, Mother's name Dorothy, Father's name Leslie. They was a hard working family with two daughters Margaret and Patricia then there was three boys, Robert, Stephen and . for me it was a place that we could play hide and seek in safety the Ickenham sign board was the boundary at ether end of the village the days we would ride our bikes as fast as we can down through cockwood just to push them all the way back up to do it again. but we was always in for tea time but i grow up and one year i took my own children for Christmas mass and when the candles came around to light the way my children looked at me and said what are they for I replied the will be lite very soon just hold it up in front of you and don't burn yourself all candles lit and i was suspicious as they was giggling about so as i lent forward to tell them to be quiet and luke my son started to say something i quickly said quiet but was his reply you are setting the Christmas tree alight . . . yes as i lent forward with the late candle in front of me i was setting the tree on fire and was giving off a lovely smell when i quickly patted it out.
