The zigzag paths on what was once known as Capstan Hill were cut in 1894. The hillside to the right was often used to celebrate events, with local people forming up to spell out words such as Empire Day (24 May 1909) and Peace, the latter on 19 July 1919, the day on which World War One was officially recognised as over.
