Standing guard over the entrance to the harbour is the 447ft eminence of Hillsborough, easily defended and probably the first settlement in the area. A Bronze Age cist was unearthed here in the 1930s, and there is a major earthwork fort at the summit, which is thought to have been built by the Dumnonii in 300BC.
