Looking at the lifeboat hanging from the davits (presumably there was one on the other side), one is tempted to wonder whether they would have been sufficient to cope in an emergency if this paddle steamer was fully laden. Up until the inquiry which followed the 'Titanic' disaster in 1912, lifeboat capacity on steamers was based on the ship's tonnage rather than the actual number of people carried.
