Irby, The Village c.1955

More about this scene
This is a similar view to photograph I42002, but facing the other way and taken after a substantial interval. The thatch of the old post office has given way to slate (left), and the business itself - with its attendant telephone kiosk - has moved just a few doors down. In the 1950s the retailing element of the Cooperative movement was still popular, and Irby sports two premises on either side of the road to prove the point. An unsecured bicycle propped against the kerb (right) is a world away from the measures that would need to be taken nowadays.
