More about this scene
Though a monastery was founded at Jarrow in AD681 by Benedict Biscop, the modern town owes its existence to Charles and George Palmer, who opened a shipyard here in 1851. The firm expanded rapidly, for it had its own coal mines, iron and steel making plant, and a marine engine works. The entire town was dependent on the yard, and when it went into liquidation in 1933 it left Jarrow with the highest unemployment rate in the country.
