More about this scene
Only a few steps further along the High Street brings us to some of the multiple stores. Marks & Spencer had replaced F Spence & Son, a furnishers with an impressive window display. Alfred Webb, on the corner of Bellfoundry Lane (left), had been established in 1897 as Webb Bros. By 1950 their façade was discreet, with a cream fascia and neat lettering, but in 1910 it had been vulgarly emblazoned with boards advertising caps, hats and trousers made to measure for 10s 6d. Webbs had branches in ten other towns, so they could safely claim to be 'The Midland Counties Outfitter'. The Old White Horse (right) would become Burton Menswear in 1962. Further down on the left is an upright sign for the Pavilion cinema, which would close in 1959.
