More about this scene
This view down Silver Street, widened here at the junction with Gold Street in the 1930s, looks towards Dalkieth Place. The 'new look' in fashions is demonstrated by the young woman crossing the street with her more dowdy companion; longer skirts, wider shoulders and a nipped-in waist were signs of relaxation from wartime clothing restrictions. Burton's Menswear, on the right of the photograph, sold suits off the peg or made to measure - all on easy payments.
