More about this scene

On 26 June 1685 the village was the scene of a skirmish between 350 royalist troops and rebel forces of the Duke of Monmouth. Monmouth lost his nerve and turned away from Bristol. On arriving at Bath, Monmouth sent a messenger to the town to demand the surrender of the local garrison. The town's answer was to shoot the messenger dead.
