More about this scene
The church was dedicated to St Mary the Virgin during the Norman period; it had belonged to a former Benedictine priory founded by Roger, Bishop of Salisbury. It is one of the few monastic churches in the county; these were preserved in the violent suppression of the monasteries and permitted to remain to be used as the parish church.
