Kilburn Lane

A Memory of Kilburn.

We moved to Kilburn from Chapter Road Willesden in 1947 and I lived there until I left home in 1965. I have clear memories of walking through the old market to St Mary's school in Granville Road and my favourite stall was the eels. I went on to the Gordon Memorial School and in school holidays was given 2s and 6p To go to the pie and mash shop in the market as a treat to have my dinner, and where they also sold jellied eels. My friends and I used to go to Queens park to play and on Sundays we went to mass at Quex Road. When I was older I went to the State cinema and used to drink in the Cock in Kilburn High Road. There was a group of us who used to go upstairs to the small bar which was run by a brilliant guy but I don't remember his name does anyone else? Saturday mornings when I was about 6 upwards, my Mum used to take me to woollies in Kilburn High Road, I can still remember the small of the highly coloured bath salts. As a treat she would take me upstairs to the ice cream counter and we would sit on high stools and have glass dishes of jelly with a roll of Lyons ice cream. Anyone reading this who knew me wouldn't know my present name but I was called by my second Christian name Blanche and my family name was Ducksbury.

Comments & Feedback

Hi there, I wonder if you knew my mother, Valerie krasnuik? Her sister was called Anita and their mother was Dorothy. My mother met my father in 1960 and he was Greek Cypriot. I would love any information whatsoever, as I have no name for him and have never seen a picture. My name is Karen.
Hi. A very good post with great memories. Very reminiscent of my early Kilburn life and as a pupil at same schools. St Mary’s RC primary school Kilburn NW6 has a FB page.
