Irene Mc Cutcheon

A Memory of Kilmelford.

I was born at Glenmore kilmelford, 11th July 1956. My family then moved to lslay when I was a couple of months old and my brother Peter was 2 years. My fathers name was Alexander Mc Cutcheon and mother Jessie. They worked on a farm and talked about a Miss Kirsty and her father who was a squadron leader. Just be interested in any history and if that Glenmore is the hotel now?

William McCutcheon was my father . He was born in or around Mochrum in June 1918 and spent a good deal of his youth in and around Isle of Whithorn . As a consequence we spent quite a few happy holidays there and driving around the area looking at places he had been ( I have recently been provided with a copy of a letter he wrote when he was 11 from his then address of " Clay Crop Farm , Kirkinner " ) .
I have been back to the Isle a few times over the years and will try and make another pilgrimage before too long . At approaching 66 yrs now ( the youngest of my father's children ) , I had best try and make time before time makes other plans for me !
It sounds weird / cheesy , but I have always felt like I was coming home when Tondergie Road came into view . Stupid I know , but hey , it works for salmon so why not for people ?
I have to say though , one such " homecoming " had a nasty shock waiting for me when I realised that McWilliams impossibly leaning store had been erased ! I couldn't believe it . The one place I've ever been where I didn't have to move my feet and get some weights and hooks for fishing , provisions for breakfast and an ice cream !
Fishing off the rocks with hand lines at Burrowhead , Standing in daylight at 10pm (or later ) on the harbour wall . Watching the " Queeny boats " unload their nets and seeing the phosphorous spark . Looking through old graveyards and wondering what relation they may be to me ........Jetta McCutcheon .......What a name ! I wonder how she came by that ?...........and of course meeting the great man himself old Charlie McGuire ! What an amazing character he was ! Well enough blether from me . I hope any reader knows what I mean .
