More about this scene
Kimpton was one of the Hertfordshire villages that kept up the tradition of celebrating May Day. A May Queen would be crowned on the village green, and the children paraded through the village wearing colourful costumes. Later in the day they would weave intricate patterns with the ribbons as they danced round the maypole. But the children were not always so well behaved, for in 1518 it was reported that the service was often disturbed by babies 'laughing, crying and even singing in church'.
