More about this scene
The house on the left, occupied by R W Fayers & Son, builders, was the home of Sir John Turner, who built The Custom House. His front door originally faced the entrance to The Custom House and as Sir John wanted to see his Regent every day, he had a statue made of him and placed above the entrance door. John Jasper Vancouver was deputy of The Custom House in 1748. There is a statue of him on the quayside. His son, Captain George Vancouver, gave his name to Vancouver in Canada.
