In 1170, the same year that Thomas Becket was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral, William de Vasci deeded the church site to 'Richard the deacon and his successors'. Originally a chapel of ease to the parish church in Brixham, the church was dedicated to St Thomas; in 1837 Kingswear became a separate parish.
