Uncle Arthur And The East Devon Golf Club

A Memory of Knowle.

Both my parents had family in Devon.

My mum had a relatively whom I knew as Uncle Arthur. He was a golf pro at the East Devon Golf Club and lived in a house close to the course with his wife Vicky and two children Peter and Christine. I was growing up in a rather overcrowded 3 bedroom prefab council house in Williton, Somerset at the time, so visiting family in Devon in lovely detached houses and little thatched cottages was like going to another world!

Uncle Arthur was always dressed in plus fours with a shirt, tie, v neck jumper and flat cap. He had a round jolly face always red because of the exposure to wind on the course. His wife, aunt Vicky, was also a very happy person with a wide gap between her front teeth. I stayed with them occasionally and aunty Vicky would take me t o the cinema in Exmouth. I can remember seeing snow white twice in the same week! I loved it.

Tragedy struck this happy family when their son Peter was killed when be fell from the cliff's. He was trying to collect seagulls eggs. I can remember that they kept his room how he had left it with his airfix planes suspended from the ceiling.

I loved my visits to uncle Arthur's. There house seemed luxury compared to mine and peaceful. Uncle Arthur taught my older brothers to play golf. I was the only one who took it up later in life though and well after he had died. This was a lovely family and I would like t o share this memory.
