The School Lane, Later Church Rd Crossing
A Memory of Laindon.
This photo, not named, was of the School Lane (later Church Rd) crossing the Arterial Rd (later the A127). It was one of the few hard roads in common with Laindon High Rd, St Nicholas Lane, Pound Lane, Wash Rd and Basildon Rd, dating back to before the turn of the century, decades before the Arterial Rd, which it crosses, was built but which in this photo can be seen to having been dualised. School Lane and Wash Rd both being hard roads was probably why in the 1920's it was chosen to be the A.E Palmers estate, some of the housing can just be seen on the extreme left of the photo.
The majoity of these bungalows still exist today having escaped the clutches of the dreaded developement Corporation.
Incidentaly, while these bungalows (mostly semi-detached) were sold for circa £450 pounds, after improvement, one was recently on offer for bids in excess of £320,000.
